Toddler

12 months – 30 months

At Ace Montessori, the Toddler Program is active, self-paced, and involves learning using all five senses. Children are introduced to the five areas of the Montessori Curriculum, including Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Culture, and develop competence through repetition and practice.

Between the ages of 12 months to 3 years, children develop their language, movement, order, handling small objects, toilet training, grace and courtesy, and the senses. The design of the toddler classroom, and the educational materials within it, reflect these interests and provide rich opportunities for learning that nurture children’s complete development.

Language

Toddlers watch the mouth avidly when someone speaks, they take in the way in which the speaker's lips move to form the words. In our Toddler program, we ensure that the child can observe the lips move as

  • We communicate with the child as they experience the different aspects of daily life in a prepared environment
  • Name things in the environment to provide the child with a rich source of language
  • Read books to the Children, Books with 1 or 2 words to a page, and simple engaging stories.

Movement

Some children learn to walk before their first birthday and others take until 16 months or longer, every child reaches each milestone in their own time. In our Toddler program children develops their body awareness as they

  • Start walking, and avail opportunities to refine this skill and build up strength.
  • Start running, jumping, hopping, climbing, pushing, pulling, balancing, and carrying by watching others.
  • Your child will be particularly interested in imitating the activities they regularly see you involved in around the home.

There is a strong connection between movement and learning. Young children are not made to sit in a chair for long periods of time, movement supports their developing brain.

Handling Small Objects

Children between 12 months and four years old possess an immense desire to work with small objects, This interest ultimately leads to the development of fine motor control and the pincer grasp. These are fundamentals for writing and many other important skills. The Toddler environment is designed to fulfill the child needs and develop fine motor skills.

Order

Children between the age of 6 months to 3 years have an innate need for order, a prepared environment ensures that the child's need for order is respected

Toilet Training

The Toddler environment prepares them to be self-sufficient as it boosts the child's confidence in their own selves.

Similarly, the daily routine reflects this age group's need to learn through movement and hands-on experience while embracing children’s individual needs, interests, and learning styles. Once children complete the Toddler Program, they progress to the Casa Program, where they master the progression of the Montessori Curriculum.
